Maybe you were fighting and got knocked out, or maybe you were just walking down the street, or maybe you went to bed as normal. Whatever it was, you have nothing but the clothes that were on your back. The walls are made of mud and the floor is stone, and the room is empty except for you, a brazier, and a woman. She sits serenely nearby in a sheer robe, legs folded as she watches you calmly.

"Welcome, stranger," she says. "You're on an island called Iwi, in the temple of Keb. The gods have brought you here for some purpose. If you have any questions for me, you may ask, though I may not be able to answer. Otherwise, you may go to the courtyard and wait with the other visitors. Go in peace."

The courtyard is full of palm trees and fruit-bearing bushes, and you can see a jungle stretching above the walls of the temple. As you make your way over to a cluster of people who look as out-of-place as you feel, the gates of the temple are pushed open...

Temple Gates is an action-adventure incentive-based smut game, set on a tropical island. There is no smut AC, and characters can live and participate in the plot without having sex, although they may not like it. Temple Gates accepts fandom characters, OCs, CRAUs, and fandom OCs or minor characters without a strong connection to the main cast. Temple Gates has multiple systems in place to facilitate CR and encourage characters to spread the love, and will afford players many opportunities to affect the plot and the setting.

comments

This is a list of locations on the island. Visitors arrive here. It's about eight miles from the city, four or five miles from the village. It's a large building, with four cornerstones and walls that enclose a courtyard, and the buildings proper inside. The corners and the foundation of the building are made of stone, as well as the inner layer of the walls, but the buildings and outer walls seem to be made of shaped mud or clay.

City

The place characters will go to live seems to be a modern city, a mile or two inland from the shore. The city and its buildings are densely packed into an area of about four square miles, with very little "sprawl" or suburbs to speak of. Cars are available to get around, but most people do fine on bikes. Most of the basic things one would expect to find in a city can be found. The city is mostly sustained on imported food and the extras from the village. They export a rare ore that's found on the ocean floor around the island.

The apartments: All player characters currently live in the same apartment building, a short walk from the edge of town.

Fishing Village

There are many fishing villages dotted along the water, but most of them are occupied by only one family or two, more like settlements than towns. The largest fishing village is the only one that will allow visitors to visit or stay there. The village lives a comfortably simple lifestyle, largely sustained by fishing and by gathering plants, although they have some agriculture and livestock.

comments

AC REWARDS

Every month, you have the option of turning in extra AC for bonus points. Inbox threads and backtags do count for bonus AC! Your points go into effect at the end of the month they were earned in -- so if you submitted for 7 points on April 12 and 9 points on April 29, you have 16 new points to use as of May 1. If, for some reason, you really really want or need to use points that aren't in effect yet, talk to the mods and we'll see if something can be worked out.

If you'd like to get an AC reward for something that's not on this list, feel free to suggest it to the mods! Make sure to let us know the specific reward you want, whether it might affect the game setting, and how many points you think it's worth.

Points go by player, not character, so if you have 12 points on Sally-Anne and 8 points on Mary Beth, you can combine them to get a twenty-point reward for Mary Beth. Also, any rewards not marked with an asterisk* can be used for another player, or a character you don't play.

Reward

Limits on use

Cost

The opportunity to get in on a plot before your plot cooldown is over. (This does not guarantee you’ll win for RNG plots.)

Once before cooldown ends.

15 points

Guaranteed spot for RNG plots. This will use your cooldown as normal, but can be used in conjunction with the above reward.

None, since the cooldown imposes a natural limit

15 points

Change the level of humanization a nonhuman character was given on their app. Sometimes, you pick an option and you end up not liking how it works out when you play it. It happens! In this case, the gods have decided they don't like their original decision for how your character interacts with the island, and want to see what happens if they change it.

None

20 points

*Start a business! The natives are cagey enough with most potential business owners that they never get through the process, but you've been around long enough that they know you and like you. Make sure to let us know the business details!

For now, characters can only found one business, although it's possible to acquire more through inheriting or buying them from other characters.

75 points

Find a cool weapon! You go on a dungeon crawl and find a reward for your efforts: a weapon. This can be a more primitive weapon like a sword or staff, or a modern one like a gun. Let us know what kind of weapon you'd like and we'll give you some details! There isn't much except animals to fight right now, but you never know in the future, right?

None

40 points for a plain weapon, 60 points for enchantments, may vary based on power

Find a cool artifact! Much the same as above, although this isn't obviously for fighting. Is it useful, or just interesting or decorative? Does interesting qualify as useful?

None

30 points, may vary based on power

*Move to the other town. The natives would prefer to have you all in one place, but if they trust you enough, you'll be welcomed into the fishing village or back into the city, if you don't like where you're currently living.

None

15 points

Mild superpowers. The gods have blessed you! You didn't have powers before, and now you do. This covers passive things like empathy, heightened senses, or breathing underwater.

Once per two months

20 points

What’s the technology level on the island?
It varies. Player characters are given phones that look remarkably like a modern iPhone, and have most of the typical functions you’d expect. Phones can only access the in-island network, but they’ve got a little internet going on alongside the network you’re used to in other games. GPS apps won’t zoom out further than the island.

Technology in your living space depends on how much sex you’re having, much like all the other markers of quality. Generally, it won’t get any better than the current cutting edge of technology, but characters from the future may find a few pieces of tech there’s no modern replacement for, if they really have a lot of sex and they really want or need that thing.

Overall, the city looks pretty much like any modern city, maybe ten years behind on some things — they haven’t gotten on the ridesharing or rental bikes train just yet. The fishing village, however, is mostly the technology level you’d expect from a tribal fishing village. They have some clothing and fabric that’s modern, and a few things that have better utility than their traditional versions — nylon ropes instead of hemp or reeds, for instance — but for the most part they live simpler lives.

The temple is the most primitive of all. They use nothing from the city, and even phones don’t work inside its walls. A character with some kind of life-saving technology will be able to survive long enough to get outside, but they shouldn’t linger in the temple. (Phones do still work in testing temples, just not in the main building of temples where worship happens.)

What do the natives speak? Is there a language barrier?
Nope! Being able to communicate is important if the visitors are to complete their tasks, so all spoken language is automatically translated into the listener’s native (or most comfortable) language. Written language appears as it is, but the device can translate it, and there’s a setting to have it translate automatically. If you find some language written down, you can even take a picture of it and see if your phone will translate it, but the results will be less reliable.

How do pregnancy and STDs work?
STDs are minor and easily treated. Anyone with an incurable STD will find they’re magically free of it once they arrive on the island.

Everyone on the island is infertile until they do a ritual to Amana to allow them to conceive. The natives have this ability inborn, and visitors gain it as soon as they step foot on the island. If a visitor arrives already pregnant, the pregnancy will be frozen in time. Pregnancy symptoms will ease, although may not disappear completely, and they will effectively stay in the same stage of pregnancy indefinitely.

Can my character get pregnant?
As of right now, no. Natives will not teach the fertility ritual to visitors. Once the game has been open for a year (March 2017), we’ll be revisiting this policy.

Can my character die? What happens?
Characters can be beaten, bled, or otherwise brought to within an inch of their life, but before their last breath, the gods will intervene. Anyone else present will lose a few minutes of time, and the character who nearly died will wake up in the main temple, mostly healed of their injuries although they may retain scars. The visitors are here for a reason and dying isn’t part of it — the gods intend to protect that mission.

So where are the natives’ kids?
Babies and toddlers may be seen occasionally, but usually they’re kept at home — the native culture has people very friendly with their neighbors and close to their family, so there’s usually someone who can look after a child for an hour while a parent runs errands. They’re a little more out and about in the fishing village than in the city. Older children live separately, but they’ll be seen at the more family-friendly festivals!

How do the natives feel about LGBT folks? What about kinky stuff?
All love and pleasure is considered a gift from the gods, no matter what form it takes. Someone who expressed homophobia would mostly be met with confused stares, then attempts to help them understand how all love is a gift (with rapidly decreasing patience). Same for kinks, provided the usual standard rules of safety and consent. Native gay couples who want children mostly do so with the help of an opposite-sex friend or relative. This can be done the old-fashioned way (sometimes as a threesome, if it will help anyone perform), or with the help of rudimentary artificial insemination (this is the only fertility technology they have).

Transgender people are similarly accepted. The natives don’t have hormones or surgery for trans people, as they don't have much for fertility tech, but there’s magic to remove or reduce the most obvious characteristics for those who are unduly distressed by them.

A trans player character who needs hormones has a few options! Please PM the mod account to discuss them if you're considering bringing a character like this.

What actually counts as sex?
The most effective sex is consensual, involves two or more people, is a little adventurous in some way, involves genitals touching genitals, and results in everyone having at least one orgasm. However, anything that involves two consenting people touching each other and at least one of them having an orgasm is close enough in effectiveness for the difference to be imperceptible. Non-consensual sex still qualifies, but it’s only about half as effective. Sexting/phone sex/skype sex can tide you over for a day or so, but wouldn’t keep your place nice long-term. Masturbation doesn’t do much of anything.

So what's the deal with powers?
When characters arrive on the island, any powers beyond what average humans can achieve will be dulled down to about 70% of their usual strength. Having sex will bring your powers back up to speed, while not having sex will cause them to deteriorate. After a month, they'll be somewhere around 40-50% power, and you can choose to have them deteriorate further if you'd like. This won't affect learned skills, and any power or technology that a character needs to live will never fall to a level where they'd die.

The usual jamjar-breaking powers -- dimensional hopping and teleportation and the like -- will seem to work, but characters will quickly realize they've just landed somewhere else on the island. It might be close by, or they might be stuck walking several hours. Probably a better idea not to try it, but a really determined character might be able to learn how to control where they land and thus be able to use their powers to get around the island quickly. Time travel will only jump them about a minute in either direction.

What does my character have with them when they arrive? Can they bring anything with them, such as guns?
All characters will arrive with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. No weapons, phones or any miscellaneous things in their pockets can come with. The only exceptions are implants or items that characters need in order to live, such as an oxygen tank.

My character was under 18 and aged up for another game. Does that count as over 18?
No. If the character spent long enough in the other game to have naturally aged to above 18 (e.g. a canon fifteen-year-old has spent five years in a game, making them twenty), that's acceptable. However, if it was a game with an age-up mechanic and it's at all questionable whether they've aged to over 18 (e.g. a seventeen-year-old character in a game for less than a year could go either way), the age-up mechanic does not count on its own and the character may not be applied.

My character found some kind of weird metal object. What is it made of?
Iwi is the only source for a fictional metal, Amanite. It's prized for computing and machining, which is why the island is relatively wealthy in modern comforts -- they're the only plausible source of this metal. (Some can be found on the sea floor, but deep sea metal mining is problematic at best.)

Amanite is silvery but darkish, a few shades darker than pewter. It's very conductive of electricity, but it stays cool to the touch. It's very hard, somewhat heavy, and an average balance between brittle and strong. Any weapons or metal artifacts that are found on Iwi will be made of this, maybe with some filigree of other metals or some dyes to change the color.

Y'all sure do have a lot of info pages.
We do have a few! We hope to give you a lot to be inspired by and play with, but if you want to take your time with it, all you really need to read before apping is the setting, rules, and FAQ (which would be that thing right above this. Hey, look at that, you're finished!)

If you have a question you don't feel was covered here, please feel free to ask, and a mod will get back to you as soon as possible!

comments

ARRIVAL
When characters arrive, they wake up in a temple. It’s built of mud and carved stone. A woman in a simple gray robe is kneeling nearby. When she notices you, she explains that you’ve arrived to an island named Iwi. You and the other visitors have been brought here by the gods — for what purpose, she doesn’t know. She trusts it will be revealed in the proper time.

She helps you up, answers any questions you have about the gods, and sends you to the courtyard to await a ride into the city, where there may be other visitors to wait with. Once a day, a rickety-looking bus pulls up in front of the temple, driven by a young woman with bleached hair who hollers out the window to get on in, we don’t have all day! Does anyone want a sandwich? Temple food sucks. Once all the visitors have piled in, it’s about a fifteen-minute drive over a rough dirt road, surrounded by palms and tall fruit trees, lush and green. The bus stops in what appears to be a perfectly normal, modern city, if most cities were on tropical islands. It’s also a good deal smaller, the population of a small town packed as densely as the downtown of a major city, taking up very little land area.

The driver of the bus introduces herself as Momo, and explains that all visitors are assigned an apartment rent-free, and your basic needs will be taken care of, but otherwise you can ask her any questions. She’s friendly about the questions, although it’s obvious she’s answered some of these things a hundred times, and she has a clipboard giving you a housing assignment. You’re given directions to the building visitors are set up in (all the starter apartments are in one building), then set loose on the island.

EVERYDAY LIVING
All visitors are assigned an apartment. Food will appear in the kitchen and basic toiletries (including safe sex supplies) will be in the bathroom, and the closet will have a few sets of clothes that are more or less things that the occupant would like to wear. Visitors are also given a small stipend that comes out of the temple’s funds, for anything outside the basics that they may need. Visitors are permitted to get jobs and move into better or larger living spaces, but it’s not encouraged, and most natives seem to be of the opinion that you could be spending that time doing whatever the gods have brought you here to do.

The more sex you have, the better your living space is. A visitor to the island who’s not having sex will live in a rundown shambles — infestations of vermin, water stains on the walls, a bare mattress on the floor, electricity and water that only sort of work. The food that appears is always a couple of days past the sell-by date, and the clothes are ill-fitting and tattered. A visitor who has sex once or twice a week will find that they live in a nice place with a few luxuries, good food, and clothes that fit well. A visitor who has sex multiple times per day will see their apartment transform into the highest of high end. Nonconsensual sex counts, but is only about half as effective. These are gentle gods, who love their people and would rather see joy than strife.

For those who know a lot about the climate, the island seems to be somewhere in the Pacific, but the wildlife is a little more varied than a typical Polynesian island, such that you could conceivably be in the Caribbean, or off the coast of Africa. Ultimately, it's impossible to tell, but the climate is definitely tropical. Iwi is certainly near the equator, and while the solstices and equinoxes are celebrated by the natives, the island experiences dry season and rainy season instead of spring/summer/winter/fall. Based on the length of days at various points of the year, it seems the island is in the northern hemisphere, within 500 miles of the equator.

THE TESTING TEMPLE
Below the temple is a series of chambers that never seem to be the same twice. In these chambers are puzzles for the faithful to solve. There are other testing chambers on the island, but they’ve been rendered inaccessible by time, and some of them only ever had a doorway built on top of them. Visitors are encouraged to explore the testing chambers and open up the ones that have fallen into disrepair. Perhaps exploring these temples will reveal the gods’ purpose for you. (And if not, at least it’s something interesting to do.)

The puzzles aren’t dangerous enough to kill anyone, but you might get knocked on your ass if you’re not careful. You also might experience strange effects if you fail to solve one…or if you don’t. They might involve riddles, obstacles, tests of will or strength or intelligence. You might need to swim or jump (although someone who can’t swim will find that the water is only chest deep). Most of them are easier with a partner, and a deep sense of accomplishment and pride in your partner will ensue if you go in together and succeed.

Some other useful links to read about the game setting:
Native Culture
Locations
Puzzles
NPCs
FAQ

comments

The main reason to have your character do a puzzle is to get an effect. Here is a list of some puzzle elements characters might find and some effects they might end up with for success or failure. You don’t need approval to use any of these, although if you think of another puzzle or effect you’d like to get, use this page to let us know. If we like it a lot, we may even add it to our list! Also, please use this page if you’d like your character to discover a new testing temple. Most likely we’ll approve your request for the discovery, but if there have been a lot recently we might need to space it out a little.

You’re free to post a log of your character and another going through a puzzle, or just refer to it in interactions with other characters. Get creative! Combine as many puzzle elements as you want. For now, we won’t be tracking puzzles, although this could change in the future if any problems arise.

Keep in mind that all effects listed here can be resisted to some degree. None of the effects will kill a character, drive them insane, or actively control their minds. All of these effects will eventually wear off if ignored. Any given puzzle will only give a character one or two effects. Failing at a puzzle will also give an effect, but it will be on the harsher side - stronger aphrodisiac, a desire to claim, etc.

What follows is only intended as a list of ideas. The setup of testing temples is really only limited by your imagination, as long as it can't easily kill you.

Puzzle elements
-Riddles, either written, given by a creature, or spoken by a disembodied voice
-Labyrinths
-Jumping along the tops of a series of poles, or following a perilous path
-Assembly puzzles, whether flat jigsaw puzzles made of stone or assembling a statue or a key
-Stepping on pressure plates in correct order
-Basically, any simple puzzle that you can conceivably scale up to room-size. Feel free to get creative with this or ask the mods if something is possible.

Other obstacles
-Having to swim or wade
-Plants in the way
-A general sense that you should turn back, although a character resistant to psychic powers may recognize that this feeling is artificial
-Darkness

Effects
-Pride in and affection for your partner
-Aphrodisiac (players can determine the strength)
-An urge to take control of someone, or give control of yourself to them
-Your thoughts getting simpler, less room for inhibitions or hangups and more focused on things you want or need.
-A deep sense of happiness and calm

comments

Temple Gates accepts OCs and canon characters, as well as canon OCs/minor characters (characters who appear in canon but don’t have enough material to be considered full characters) and fandom OCs (OCs created in the setting of a fandom). The latter two will only be accepted if the character has no close connection to a canon character. Challenge apps are not accepted.

Canon AUs and the same characters from different media are not accepted. The only exception to this is characters who have many different portrayals from totally different sources (e.g. mythological characters, retellings of Shakespeare, etc). In other words, if there's a comics Bucky, an MCU Bucky may not be apped, but Hamlet and Jax Teller could coexist. A good rule of thumb would be that if two characters are from dramatically different settings or time periods, or they have different names, it's probably fine; if not, look a little closer or ask the mods. Imported history from other RP games is accepted, but no other fandom or player-created AUs.

Nonhuman characters may be apped, but must be given human-compatible genitalia if they don't already have it. Also, very large or very small characters will be made roughly human-sized. Otherwise, the level of humanization is up to the player. Characters with powers will have them reduced to about 70% power upon arrival. This applies to supernatural as well as technology-granted powers. Applications for any character that fits these criteria are expected to describe how the reduced powers will work and/or describe the new body.

No characters effectively under 18 will be accepted. A character that is effectively an adult but technically very young will be accepted (such as a clone or computer program). A character which is technically very old but effectively under 18 (such as a vampire who was turned as a child) will not.

A player can apply two characters per round, up to a total of five.

Some tips to keep in mind:

Blank video game protagonists and the like are acceptable. However, these characters have a tendency to have done everything in the game and be the most powerful being in the universe -- for these characters, we recommend that you contain them to a more realistic level. For example, a Bethesda protagonist can have done one or two of the faction questlines, but not all of them, and shouldn't be super powerful in more than two or three skills.

CRAU characters should be recognizable to any canon-fresh castmates you get. It doesn't matter how many years of development a character has had in other games; if they've changed beyond recognition, we'll ask you to adapt them into an OC or play the canon version.

Physical changes imposed by other game settings will be removed here, but not ones gained by the character's choices. The aging-up of a smut game will be removed; a tattoo a character got in-game will not.

Player name: Your name!
Player contact: Most likely we'll PM the journal if we have questions, but if that doesn't work, how else can we get in touch with you?
Player age: Self-explanatory.
Characters already played: In case we get more than one person with the same handle, we don't want to mix you up!

Name: The character, not you.
Journal: The character journal you'll be using in the game.
Canon: Please note if the character is a fandom OC, CRAU, or minor character.
Canon point: Self-explanatory.
Age: Use this section to explain if the character's age might be fuzzy in any way.
Reference: A link to a wikia page is ideal here, but anything that describes the canon and your character is fine. OCs may write a world description or link to one if you have a writeup elsewhere. Please also include your OC's personal history in this section, but it doesn't need to be long -- a summary of the turning points and defining moments will do.
Personality: Please keep this section under a thousand words. A personality which is too far over the limit will receive revisions or a rejection. Please keep this section as concise as you can while still supported with examples. (CRAU characters: this should be their canon personality only.)
CRAU: If the character is a CRAU, describe their development here. Again, keep this as concise as you reasonably can. Otherwise, you can put n/a or take this out.
Skills and attributes: This is where you describe powers or physical attributes for nonhuman characters. Please feel free to describe any mundane skills your character has, as well! Please remember to mention how your character's powers will be affected by being at 70% when they enter the game, and how they'd be affected if their powers were to be dulled even further.
First person sample: A link to a thread, or you can write an original sample in the game's setting. Please don't use TFLN threads as these are cracky by nature, but any other meme threads are fine. If you choose to link, please use a thread within the last six months.
Third person sample: Same as above. If you want to use links for both samples, that's fine!

Changed 3/3/16: clarified the skills and attributes section
Changed 6/23/16: went to always-open apps and introduced age cap

<b>Player name:</b>
<b>Player contact:</b>
<b>Player age:</b>
<b>Characters already played:</b>

<b>Name:</b>
<b>Journal:</b>
<b>Canon:</b>
<b>Canon point:</b>
<b>Age:</b>
<b>Reference:</b>
<b>Personality:</b>
<b>CRAU:</b>
<b>Skills and attributes:</b>
<b>First person sample:</b>
<b>Third person sample:</b>

Applications are currently OPEN. Temple Gates has always-open apps rather than app rounds, but we may close them for short periods for reasons like a rush of apps, the length of a plot, or real life.

Characters ages 18-20 are currently capped at six. We currently have four in the game.

comments

When the seas are rough and unwelcoming, it means the people have displeased him. When they’re bountiful and warm, that is his loving hand. Keb carries a spear, and whales are sacred to him. Dolphins are considered his messengers, and the priesthood practices a form of divination based on the flips, sounds, and appearances of dolphins seen from the shore or fishing boats. When the sea is rough but the people have been good, it’s assumed that the other gods are interfering with Keb and making him upset.

templegateskeb
Keb's pb is Alexander Siddig.

Amana, Goddess of Fertility, Mother Goddess, is thoughtful and loving. No matter what the people have done, no matter how the gods are pleased or displeased, they will always have the love of their mother. When a native of the island wishes to have a child, male or female, they perform a ritual to Amana and she bestows fertility on them, with the assurance that a child will come when they’re truly ready. Some people try for years without having a child, and they’re often told by the priesthood that they’re simply not ready yet, and to look inwardly for what they still need to prepare for a child.

templegatesamana
Amana's pb is Zoe Saldana.

Makai, God of Lust, is flighty and clever. His attention can’t seem to be captured for very long, but when it’s upon you, it’s said to be like being loved by the sun. He likes games and gambling and food, and is often associated with pleasure in general — sexual as well as sensual or aesthetic. Being the direct object of his love is a mixed blessing, as once it’s gone you will never be satisfied again.

templegatesmakai
Makai's pb is Oscar Isaac.

Lira is a priestess devoted to Keb. She can usually be found in the temple, and she greets most new visitors. She’s generally solemn and respectful, but she’ll sometimes make a joke or a snarky comment (albeit with a completely straight face). She’s deeply curious about the worlds of the visitors, and will listen eagerly if someone wants to tell her, but considers it impolite to ask directly.

templegateslira
Lira's pb is Danielle Hayes.

Haka is the main ambassador between the visitors and the village on the coast. He’s the strong and silent type, and tends to be concise when he speaks. He’s very wary around the visitors, so not a lot is known about him yet, but he seems to be well-liked by the other natives.

templegateshaka
Haka's pb is Jason Momoa.

Mamoshinha (known mostly as Momo) is the main coordinator and go-between for visitors in the modern city. She’s bouncy and excitable, and rarely seems to have less than 80% of her skin showing — a bikini top and short shorts are her usual outfit. Momo is the second native most visitors will meet, and during arrival periods she makes daily trips to the temple to bring back new visitors. Once in the city, she assigns housing and answers logistical questions.

templegatesmomo
Momo's pb is Sanoe Lake.

code credit: photosynthesis

comments

Hiatuses can last up to a month, but if you need a longer one for some reason, please email the mods and talk to us, and we’ll see if we can accommodate you. Otherwise, use the form below. Characters on hiatus can go on autopilot, or they can go stay at the temple. This is much like a meditation retreat, and any messages to a person’s device will autoreply with a text message:

I am in Amana’s arms, worshipping in her temple. I will be back with you soon.

Characters who drop just disappear without warning, although if you want to play your character requesting the gods to send them home, you’re free to do so. Devices sent to a dropped character’s device will come back with a “Could not send - invalid recipient” error. We’re sorry to see you go, but we understand that things happen and hope you rejoin the game in the future.

HIATUS
<b>Player:</b>

Leave a comment with the form below to notify us of a canon update! We just ask that you wait until we’ve had a chance to look it over and give the approval before going ahead with it. ICly, canon updates work the same as drops. Characters disappear from the island and messages to their device bounce, but they return shortly. Characters can be gone for anywhere between 1 and 7 days.

All comments to this entry are screened. Sending the approval unscreens it, but we can screen it again if you’d prefer.

<b>Character:</b>

1. Don't be a dick.
I think we all know the basic rules by now, don’t we? Being a dick will earn you a strike or a warning. Two warnings are equal to a strike, even if it’s for two different things. Three strikes, you’re out. Some things will be worth an instant ban, including plagiarism and putting another person’s character in a situation the player has said no to (e.g. if a player has said you may not attack their character, do not post attacking them anyway).

2. If you're not sure, ask.
Ask the player if they’re cool with something. Ask the mods if you’re not sure about a rule or something in the setting. Communication is good! The mods would much rather you ask than be unsure.

3. Appable characters
To be eligible for the game, characters must be over the age of 18, for all effective purposes (e.g. a clone who was technically born an hour ago but has the apparent age and mental maturity of a thirty-year-old is acceptable. A vampire who is 400 years old but appears ten is not). This will be enforced by mods. If you apply a character and claim they’re an adult, and then play them having a small child’s understanding of genitals or sex, this is worth one warning to cut it out and then booting the character.

Non-human characters will be made sexually compatible with humans. This doesn’t necessitate exactly human genitalia, but it should be close enough in shape, size, and material for the mechanics to work. Otherwise, the level of humanization is up to the player. Non-humans can be given fully human bodies, or retain most of their usual form, or be mostly human with a few of their true form’s traits.

We accept OCs and canon characters, as well as canon OCs (characters who appear in canon but don’t have enough material to be considered full characters) and fandom OCs (OCs created in the setting of a fandom). The latter two will only be accepted if the character has no close connection to a canon character. A random Hogwarts professor would be acceptable. Harry Potter’s long-list sister would not. For borderline cases, we will ask the cast already in the game or, if no cast exists, ask for revisions explaining how you expect your character to interact with the cast.

Canon AUs are not accepted. The only exception to this is characters who have many different portrayals from totally different sources (e.g. mythological characters, retellings of Shakespeare, etc). In other words, if there's a comics Bucky, an MCU Bucky may not be apped, but Hamlet and Jax Teller could coexist. A good rule of thumb would be that if two characters are from dramatically different settings or time periods, it's probably fine. Imported history from other RP games is accepted, but no other fandom or player-created AUs.

Each player can play up to five characters. For now, there will be no other caps, but this is subject to change.

4. Activity check
Temple Gates does not have smut AC, however, please understand that this is a smut game. If you’re uncomfortable with smut or sexual themes, this is not the game for you. If we run into problems with this, a smut AC may be introduced in the future.

AC is five log comments or ten network comments made by you in one thread, per month, per character, or one post (we may ask for extra if the post submitted has no comments or you haven’t responded to any). There is a permanent AC post here. When you join, you’ll make a top-level, and every month submit your activity as a reply to your top-level. You can do this at any time before the end of the month, but we’ll post a reminder a few days before the last day of the month. You are exempt from AC if it’s been less than two weeks since you were accepted, or you were on hiatus for two weeks or more in the month.

You can also submit extra AC for points. The same criteria as above applies, and the same thread can count for multiple points. For example, if you have thirty log comments in one thread, it can count for your original AC and five additional points. Points go into effect at the beginning of the next month. Base AC threads must have been started in this month, but backtags are eligible for points.

5. Plots
Each month, there will be some kind of event. Some events will move the story forward, and some will be for fun or to present an obstacle for the players before the story moves forward. Almost every event and plot point can be opted out of -- only a few will unilaterally affect the entire island.

Plot events will have the opportunity to sign your character up to influence the plot! Many of these will involve an RNG (random.org, specifically) to choose who affects the plot and who's just along for the ride, but some will have enough plotty spots for everyone.

Once a character has played an important role in a plot, whether by winning an RNG or getting a guaranteed spot, you may not sign that character up for another plotting slot for six months (although they can still go along for the ride). You may still sign up other characters, and the losers of RNGs can still sign up. The only exception is the AC rewards that affect plot slots.

comments

When you are accepted to the game, make a comment here with your character’s name and canon in the header. Sometime during the month, submit your AC using the “base AC” form below. For any points threads after that, use the “bonus AC” form. A reminder will be posted a few days before the end of each month. A sweep list will be posted on the first of each month, and those on the list will have three days to post AC, notify us of a mistake, or take a strike. Players may have a friend post to the warning list for them if they can’t for some reason.

Please submit any extra threads in a separate comment, and please keep extra comments to a minimum! A good strategy would be to submit base AC as soon as you have it, then save up and submit for your points when the reminder goes up. Two or three comments is fine, but please don’t spam the post every time you’ve reached five or ten more comments.

Base AC must be in a thread in the game comms that was started in this month, but backtags and IC inboxes are eligible for points. A thread that was submitted for AC and any comments your character has made within said post count separately. (ie: a network post + 10 comments count for a point each.)
If you’re linking a thread you’ve used before, please link the first comment that has not previously been counted and start your comment/point count from there.

If you don’t make AC, you may take a strike, but you have to tell the mods you’re taking a strike to confirm that you are still here.

Remember, one proof is 10 network comments, 5 log comments, or one post. You need one of these for base AC and each additional one is worth a point. Additionally, log comments only count towards log ac if they are posted within the log community.

BASE AC
Subject: (MONTH) BASE AC
<b>POST/LOG/NETWORK:</B> <a href="URL GOES HERE">link</a> (## comments)

BONUS AC:
Subject: (MONTH) BONUS AC
<b>Thread 1:</b> <a href="URL GOES HERE">link</a> (post/## comments) # POINTS
